This is the concise source of truth for Ashes Beneath the Sun.

If a recovered chapter, older continuity note, future preview, arc draft, OVA, or loose note conflicts with this file, this file wins until canon is deliberately revised.

Authority and hierarchy

• The central hidden figure is referred to here as the Master. The recovered chapters often use the Mystery Man as a draft label for the same role.
• The broad hierarchy is Master → Vesper → NULL-01 / apex anti-anomaly experiments → Cerberus → Umbra. NULL-01 can interfere with Vesper’s rules but is not initially stronger than her.
• Vesper is fully autonomous and serves the Master by choice. Her personal curiosity, respect, amusement, or interest never outranks his objectives.
• If the Master orders Victoria killed, Vesper genuinely attempts to complete the order. She does not secretly train Victoria, throw fights, preserve her for a rematch, or plan a rebellion.
• The Master should not constantly humiliate Vesper to prove superiority. His position is better shown through Vesper’s voluntary loyalty, rare effortless demonstrations, and the fact that someone of her power considers him worth serving.

Master and Vesper

• Vesper was not created by the Master. She is not a laboratory construct, rebuilt human, synthetic assistant, or one of his experimental lines.
• Vesper is an ancient supernatural being who has existed for at least several centuries. Her exact species, origin, and upper age remain unknown.
• The Master’s own origin is also unresolved. He must not be reduced to an ordinary contemporary young scientist; his apparent age is misleading and his lifespan exceeds a normal human life.
• Both normally appear physically young, broadly in their twenties and no older-looking than roughly thirty.
• Chronological age does not determine their hierarchy. Which of them is older remains deliberately unresolved.
• Their relationship is emotionally close without making the Master intentionally flirtatious. He is attached to Vesper and naturally notices her habits and absence, but is largely oblivious to the romantic framing; Vesper is more aware of it.
• Vesper’s title The Assistant is meaningful and chosen. It is not an insult or a role she secretly wants to escape.

Victoria mainline

• Victoria’s long progression is performative confidence → humiliation → survival → discipline → competence → leadership → anomalous power → confrontation with a much larger hierarchy.
• Asterra is Victoria’s country. Veyr is its neighboring rival. The Karsk Corridor is the established geopolitical flashpoint.
• Victoria progresses from media personality to survivor to trained OECR field consultant and anomalous-response specialist. She advises institutions rather than unrealistically commanding every domain herself.
• Chapters 1–14 are current written canon through the first Cerberus phase.
• At the end of Chapter 14, Cerberus is ACTIVE — UNLOCATED, not defeated.
• The next locked mainline sequence is post-Redstone fallout → Aegis Meridian / Black Archive → Vesper’s heist → Project NULL. Exact prose and final chapter titles remain to be written.
• Victoria is not part of Aegis Meridian’s full initial fight with Vesper. She arrives late or intersects only briefly, preserving their later major confrontation.
• The H-7 / Vesper true-form file is a future preview set many arcs later, not the immediate next chapter and not Vesper’s defeat arc.

Black Flame

Black Flame is one rule-based anomalous phenomenon, not ordinary fire and not a license for unrelated powers.

• It does not cast normal illumination; it is described as darkness, distortion, absence, or flame-shaped negative space.
• It can reorganize matter toward stored structural templates.
• Large restoration cannot create unlimited matter from nothing; it requires substrate, stored biomass, or energy.
• It can convert organized matter or energy into usable substrate. More advanced users can apply this with far greater precision.
• Mastery differs by user: Umbra is instinctive and crude, Cerberus is distributed and adaptive, NULL-01 is engineered around anti-anomaly interactions, Vesper is conscious and programmable, and the Master’s source-level mastery remains unrevealed.

Umbra Maw / U-01 / NULL-00

• U-01 is catastrophic by human standards but low-tier relative to the hidden hierarchy.
• In the Master’s later Project NULL lineage, U-01 is retrospectively treated as NULL-00: a crude precursor whose adaptation and continuity mechanics proved useful but insufficient.
• U-01 remains the historical field designation used by the people who fought it; NULL-00 is a later internal lineage designation.
• It adapts rapidly, not instantly.
• Sunlight and sufficiently intense broad-spectrum light can overwhelm its restoration.
• Forest-scale restoration at Site Echo depends on the prepared biome anchor; U-01 cannot rebuild arbitrary ecosystems anywhere.
• HELIOS kills U-01 by overwhelming its continuity process and damaging the physical anchor/core maintaining its template.

Cerberus

Cerberus’s defining rule is:

One distributed cognitive state across partitioned biomass. What one body learns, all active bodies know.

• It has finite biomass and may partition that biomass into specialized bodies.
• More partitions mean less mass and durability available to each body.
• It can share learned information, reshape in response to observed threats, imitate learned voices, build limited biological disguises, infer observed systems, and recombine bodies.
• It cannot create unlimited mass, perfectly copy someone instantly, know an unseen system by plot convenience, adapt before receiving enough information, or become automatically immune to every attack.
• Redstone must remain competent. Cerberus defeats it by attacking assumptions, allocation, trust, and institutional behavior—not because the facility is foolish.
• Redstone holds seven major anomalies. Cerberus releases six and deliberately leaves Glass Seven sealed.
• Glass Seven itself remains unresolved. A Glass-Seven-derived research sample created during earlier testing exists separately from the sealed anomaly and later becomes important to the Black Archive and Project NULL.

Aegis Meridian

Aegis Meridian is a multinational anomalous-response hero unit created after repeated incidents prove that conventional military containment alone is not enough. They are competent, powerful, and politically important; their loss to Vesper must not be written as a joke.

Core members:

• Mara Venn / Vector Saint — creates short-lived directional fields that bend trajectories and redistribute momentum. Uses field anchors and compact coil-lance weapons.
• Elias Rook / Gravemarch — can increase his body’s effective mass and inertia without proportionally increasing size. Uses Rookspine, a segmented breaching staff whose sections can launch and relock along magnetic rails.
• Sera Kade / White Banner — uses neuromuscular overclocking, accelerated reactions, pain suppression, balance control, and short bursts of extreme physical output. Fights with a split spear that can separate into paired close-range weapons.
• Niko Vale / Threadstep — creates temporary tension lines between surfaces for traversal, rescue, restraint, and midair redirection; also has unusually fast sensory processing.
• Imani Saye / Nullglass — wears impact-redistributing anti-anomaly armor and can create brief local null windows that weaken some anomalous effects around her.
• Dr. Anya Sol / Palinode — creates short-lived perceptual revisions that cause nearby minds to misremember the immediate sequence of an action, producing false spatial expectations without rewriting long-term memory.

Aegis Meridian’s function in the Black Archive arc is to demonstrate the best organized human response available at that stage of the story.

The Black Archive heist

• After Redstone, governments consolidate dangerous research, recovered anomalous technology, HELIOS records, Redstone data, and selected artifacts into a heavily protected multinational repository informally known as the Black Archive.
• The Archive contains a Glass-Seven-derived research sample produced during earlier study. It is not Glass Seven itself and does not resolve the sealed anomaly’s true nature.
• Under the Master’s orders, Vesper infiltrates the Archive to retrieve that sample and erase or corrupt the research copies that would allow humanity to reproduce the work.
• The mission begins as infiltration, escalates through containment, and ends with the full Aegis Meridian response.
• Vesper defeats or disables the team and leaves with the objective. The sequence should preserve human competence: the heroes escalate intelligently and each forces Vesper to expose another layer of capability.
• Core combat motifs that are canonized for later prose: Vector Saint’s control space is superseded by Vesper’s Vector Sovereignty; Vesper captures and violently reassigns one of Gravemarch’s launched breaching segments; Threadstep is intercepted during a vertical traversal exchange; Nullglass briefly interferes with Black Flame before Vesper pierces the supposedly protected armor; Palinode’s perceptual revision fails because Vesper can track the false and true action streams in parallel.
• Vesper still does not reveal her complete true form here. H-7 remains the first full true-form encounter.
• Victoria reaches the incident late enough to see the aftermath and may have a short encounter with Vesper, but this is not their decisive fight.

Project NULL / NULL-01

• Project NULL is the Master’s attempt to build an organism specifically capable of interfering with anomalous and supernatural rules, rather than merely overpowering conventional threats.
• The Glass-Seven-derived sample recovered from the Black Archive is a critical component, catalyst, or reference substrate for the successful phase of Project NULL. Its exact underlying nature remains unrevealed.
• The resulting entity is NULL-01, commonly shortened to Null.
• Null’s defining capability is local rule denial: after identifying and interacting with a rule, Null can make that rule operate incorrectly or fail within a limited local region.
• Examples include disrupting regeneration, destabilizing spatial connections, weakening externally maintained reinforcement, or interrupting some supernatural continuity effects.
• Rule denial is not universal power cancellation. Null needs exposure/information, has finite range and capacity, can be resisted by sufficiently strong or unfamiliar phenomena, and cannot simply declare any desired law nonexistent.
• Null is designed to threaten entities in Vesper’s tier by interfering with how their abilities function, but Vesper remains above NULL-01 initially.
• Null Star is a later evolution and not part of NULL-01’s starting kit. Its conceptual direction is causal severance: breaking the connection between two normally linked states such as wound ↔ regeneration, portal ↔ destination, summon ↔ summoner, or artifact ↔ sustaining source. Exact limits remain future-story material.

Vesper: capability and reveal guardrails

Vesper is catastrophically above human combatants, but her abilities should remain coherent rather than expanding arbitrarily.

Current established capability includes:

• extreme speed and strength;
• Vector Sovereignty / spatial force control: redirecting, cancelling, stopping, reversing, or reassigning trajectories and force;
• Black Flame Continuity: regeneration fast enough to restore tissue while a blade is still passing through it;
• Black Flame constructs and destructive application, including wounds that can resist ordinary closure;
• Seamstep / spatial rifts for movement, with broader rift use available for summoning or deploying creatures when the story calls for it;
• perfect or near-perfect morphic disguise for infiltration;
• perceptual/sensor desynchronization around disguises;
• an unfolded crown/halo structure that supports parallel tracking and control;
• a black sword as a serious combat weapon when Vesper stops relying on casual one-finger dominance.

Reveal progression:

1. Archive 7-G: disguised Vesper redirects a bullet with one finger.
2. Cerberus phase: Cerberus itself treats Vesper as a boundary it should not cross.
3. Black Archive: humanity’s best organized hero unit forces Vesper to expose more of her combat toolkit, but not her full true form.
4. H-7 future preview: Victoria’s now-superhuman team attacks together and Vesper neutralizes the assault with one finger; her neck heals before Sofia’s blade finishes passing through it.
5. Later arcs reveal additional layers gradually.
6. Many major arcs later, Victoria may defeat Vesper for real. Vesper does not intend, arrange, or desire that loss.

OVA / side-story continuity

• OVAs live under ../ovas/ and are side-story material, not automatic mainline canon.
• An OVA may be canon-compatible without having a fixed place in the chapter chronology.
• OVAs cannot override this file, change the hierarchy, secretly make Vesper disloyal, or force a tragic/final ending onto the mainline.
• The emotional relationship guardrails for Master and Vesper still apply in comedy, slice-of-life, and alternate-future OVAs.

Intentionally unresolved

Do not prematurely lock down:

• Vesper’s exact species, birthplace, or true upper age;
• the Master’s original identity, species, or exact age;
• which of the two is chronologically older;
• when and how they first met;
• the event or history that made Vesper choose him as her Master;
• whether Black Flame originated with either of them or predates both;
• the true nature of Glass Seven;
• the full mechanism by which the Glass-Seven-derived sample enables Project NULL;
• the full reason the Master stands above Vesper;
• Null Star’s final limits and ultimate fate.
